NJ DEP to invest additional dollars to prioritize DC fast charging electric vehicle infrastructure
Highland Park, NJ: New Jersey is investing in the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) market as a primary strategy in reducing emissions and cleaning up air quality statewide. In order to achieve the state’s ambitious goals for EV adoption, we need to significantly increase public access to fast charging infrastructure. Local entities can play a key role in addressing that market need, and now a new NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) grant program can provide the majority of funding to build out this infrastructure.
The NJ DEP has announced that they will dedicate an additional $7.6 million to EV charging infrastructure, prioritizing DC fast chargers in accordance with the goal set by the new EV law to significantly expand the availability of public fast chargers in accessible locations along corridors by 2025. The deadline for project proposals is approaching quickly, and applicants will need to move quickly to take advantage of up to $200K in grant funding.
A few key details:
- Awarded sites must be open to the public, may not be on residential property, and must provide at least 150 kW of charger capacity.
- The fast charging stations must be located within a one-mile driving distance from an exit or intersection along a designated major travel corridor (list of designated travel corridors attached). There cannot be an existing fast charging station operating at the site.
- Public entities can recover up to 100% of their costs, while non-public entities can recover 80% of their costs, up to a maximum of $200,000 in both cases.
- Applications are due by June 22, 2020.
Application Process:
- Register for NJSTART at njstart.gov. Once registered, applicant will be provided a “NJ Vendor ID Number” that is needed to complete the Program Application.
- Complete the following forms and submit to NJDEP Bureau of Mobile Sources at DriveGreen@dep.nj.gov
